The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program will host an upcoming in-person lecture titled “The History of Cleveland’s Underground Railroad” Thursday, Sept. 22, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Landmark Centre Building, Suite 100 (25700 Science Park Dr.).
The Underground Railroad was a vast network of allies that provided shelter to enslaved African Americans and helped them seek freedom from the South.
In this lecture, Hebert Addison Burns will explore the key role that the network played in Ohio. The lecture will:
- Cover how federal and state policies set the tone for the Underground Railroad activities in Cleveland;
- Explore documented evidence of Underground Railroad conductors, fugitive slave rescue missions, and opposing views within the church; and
- Discuss how the Underground Railroad operations were products of Ohio’s political culture.
