SOURCE announces winners of December Intersections Poster Session

Support of Undergraduate Research & Creative Endeavors (SOURCE) recently announced the winters of the December Intersections Poster Session.

The spring installment of Intersections is part of Research ShowCASE, which will be held Friday, April 21. Learn more about the event at case.edu/provost/source/intersections/intersections.html.

The following students won awards at the December event. 

Humanities poster competition

  • First place: Cameron Macaskill, “Ethical diamond Extraction in Southern Africa.” Faculty mentor: Shannon French, the Inamori Professor of Ethics
  • Second place: Christina Coppel, “Modifying physical therapy language for the dance population.” Faculty mentor: Karen Potter, professor and chair of the Department of Dance

Social sciences poster competition

  • First place: Nardine Taleb, “Developing and testing new pediatric sentence recognition materials.” Faculty mentor: Professor Lauren Calandruccio, assistant professor of psychological sciences
  • Second place (tie): Gili Ornan, “Expressions of hope predict rapid response to prolonged exposure for posttraumatic stress disorder.” Faculty mentors: Norah Feeny, professor of psychological sciences, and Andrew Cooper, a postdoctoral scholar
  • Second place (tie): Emily Pestello, “Compliance with fitness goals: Gamification as a form of self-efficacy.” Faculty mentor: Vera Tobin, assistant professor of cognitive science
  • Second place (tie): Raghav Tripathi, “Healthcare disparities in melanoma survival by race and insurance status.” Faculty mentor: Jeremy Bordeaux, associate professor of dermatology

Natural sciences poster competition

  • First place (tie): Mahima Devarajan, “Temporal specificity of EZH2-mediated epigenetic regulation in the cranial mesenchyme.” Faculty mentor: Radhika Atit, associate professor of biology
  • First place (tie): Alexandra Faidiga, “Overproduction of ovules relative to average pollen receipt in Trillium grandiflorum.” Faculty mentor: Jean Burns, associate professor of biology
  • Second place (tie): Raghav Tripathi, “Regional cingulate cortex volume changes in patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizures.” Faculty mentor: Ronald Harper, Department of Neuroscience at the University of California Los Angeles.
  • Second place (tie): Erin Conway, “Terrestrial habitat selection of American toads in response to changes in forest composition.” Faculty mentor: Michael Benard, the George B. Mayer Assistant Professor in Urban and Environmental Studies

Engineering poster competition

  • First place (tie): Keith Dona, “Effect on rat motor behavior of chronic intracortical microelectrodes implanted in the motor cortex.” Faculty mentor: Jeffrey Capadona, associate professor of biomedical engineering
  • First place (tie): Nicholas Hazen, Grace Foxworthy, Hanna Huss, James McGinnity, and Nathaniel Landis, “Sensorized cane for fall detection and alert.” Faculty mentor: Matthew Williams, adjunct assistant professor of biomedical engineering.
  • Second place (tie): John Hovater, Kimaya Gupte, Daniel Simmons, Jordyn Ting, and Anna Verhanovitz, “Designing an upper extremity device for reach and grasp tasks in stroke survivors.” Faculty mentor: Matthew Williams, adjunct assistant professor of biomedical engineering.
  • Second place (tie): Adam Erlichman, “Synthesis of thiazole-substituted benzoxazine, and its polymer’s unique properties.” Faculty mentor: Hatsuo Ishida, professor of macromolecular science and engineering.
