Where was Monday’s photo taken? (And no, it’s not what most people guessed)

On Monday, we showcased a photo of a sundial on campus. Contrary to many guesses, this sundial actually is located in front of Thwing Center (though another is present on Mather Quad near Guilford House).

The sundial has been located on campus for nearly 30 years, after the Society for Creative Anachronism’s Cleveland chapter donated it in 1983 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Case Western Reserve University Medieval Culture Society.

The sundial is patterned after a 13th-century predecessor that sits atop the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy.

An article about the timepiece appeared in The Daily in 2008, after the original designs and photographs of its construction were presented as a gift to the University Archives.
