New CWRU mailing lists must be created in Google Groups starting June 30

Sympa (Lists@Case) no longer will support new lists

From department announcements to student correspondence, mailing lists play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of Case Western Reserve University. It is critical that the university use a mailing list system that is modern and reliable.

Case Western Reserve mailing lists are undergoing a gradual migration from Sympa Mailing List Manager (lists.case.edu) to Google Groups. Groups meets the university’s needs and is integrated with popular CWRU Google Apps such as Gmail, Calendar and Drive.

In March, the Division of Information Technology Services (ITS) released a self-service, automated migration tool for members of the university community to migrate their Sympa mailing lists to Groups. Learn more about the migration process.

As part of the migration effort, the creation of all new mailing lists at CWRU must transition to Groups. This transition will occur on June 30. Starting on this date, members of the university community will not be able to create a new mailing list at lists.case.edu. Instead, new lists must be created in Groups by visiting case.edu/its/google/groups and clicking “Create or Delete a Group.”

Users may select one of five templates from which to build their new Group. These templates offer suggested settings and match the templates that were available in Sympa Mailing List Manager. For instructions on creating a Group, see case.edu/its/google/groups/training/create-a-group.

Mailing lists that currently exist in the Sympa Mailing List Manager are not affected by this change and will continue to function normally at this time. However, as Sympa will be disabled eventually, CWRU community members who own or moderate mailing lists should migrate them to Groups soon by visiting case.edu/its/google/groups/migrate.

Training resources for Groups are available at case.edu/its/google/groups/training. For assistance with Groups or the migration process, contact the ITS Service Desk at 216.368.HELP (4357) or help@case.edu.
