Learn about oyster mushroom production with University Farm class

Two more installments of the University Farm’s “Basics of Oyster Mushroom Production” course will be offered this month. The course will be held Friday, Feb. 8, and Feb. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Farm Food Program staff member Matt Burtonshaw, who manages the daily operations of the farm’s oyster mushroom production, will lead the course.

In this hands-on learning experience, Burtonshaw will cover:

  • The economics;
  • Growing requirements;
  • Equipment needed;
  • Sterilization;
  • Potential problems; and
  • Packaging and harvesting.

Participants will learn how to make a miniature mushroom bag to take home.

The course fee is $50. Each class will be limited to 12 participants, with a minimum of five confirmed registrations needed to offer the class.

Participants must be at least 18 years old to register.
