Learn about foraging with the University Farm this summer

Squire Valleevue and Valley Ridge Farms will offer an adult continuing education course on foraging this summer. Participants in the class will learn how to safely identify, sustainably harvest and prepare wild flora and fungi.

Registration is open now for the next installment of the course, which will consist of three, three-hour classes on the following Saturdays: June 29, July 6 and July 13. Classes will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The course also will be offered Sept. 14, 21 and 28.

Instructor Ryan Bennett, a former chef and now the Farm Food Program coordinator for Case Western Reserve University’s Squire Valleevue and Valley Ridge Farms, has spent the last 10 years foraging throughout northeast Ohio for local restaurants.

The course involves a large amount of hiking through the woods. Boots or hiking shoes, long pants, water bottles, bug spray and sunscreen are highly recommended.

The course fee is $75. A signed course waiver is required; the form will be emailed to registered participants. Six participants are needed to offer the course, with a minimum of 12. Attendees must be at least 18 years old.

Registration is available through CampusGroups. Credit card payment is due at registration.
