CWRU is home to the nation’s first free, open-access community computer system

Case Western Reserve University is home to the nation’s first free, open-access community computer system, which began in 1986.

The late Thomas M. Grundner, a former School of Medicine faculty member, launched the system, named Cleveland Free-Net.

The system grew from a project Grundner and his colleagues conducted beginning in 1984 in which they provided a free medical question-and-answer service for the community.

This week, we asked the university community if they could name the system, and just under half of respondents could.
