Case Western Reserve University alumni often play critical roles in health care, from patient practice to administration. Among them is David L. Satcher (MED ’70; GRS ’70, anatomy; HON ’90), who was the answer to this week’s Connect trivia question: What alumni served as both the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Surgeon General?
Satcher served as director of the CDC from 1993 to 1998 and went on to become the U.S. Surgeon General from 1998 to 2002. A majority of respondents knew Satcher served in both roles.
Other guesses included Jesse L. Steinfeld (MED ’49), who was the surgeon general from 1969 to 1973, and Julie L. Gerberding (CWR ’77, MED ’81), who was the CDC director from 2002 to 2009.
