Campus Spotlight: WRUW 91.1 FM

Those who turn their radio dial to 91.1 FM are met with an eclectic music selection curated in part by Case Western Reserve University students, alumni and faculty members. On WRUW-FM, Case Western Reserve’s campus radio station, volunteer programmers are free to select the music for their own shows with genres ranging from rock to electronica to polka—and much more.

The station has roots at the Flora Stone Mather College for Women, when a public-address system was used to broadcast in 1946. The station later became an AM-carrier station and in 1967, took the on the WRUW call letters and switched to an FM format.

Today, the station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 15,000 watts and webcasts its content.

This week, WRUW 91.1 FM will host its largest event of the year: Studio-A-Rama, an annual live-music event that has been taking place for the past 37 years. Originally hosted in the courtyard of the Mather Memorial Building, the festival was named for “Studio A” where bands play live on air weekly during the “Live From Cleveland” program.

This year’s national headliners include Matador Records’ Lucy Dacus and special guest Land of Talk, who will visit Cleveland for the first time during the event. The daylong event will be held during homecoming festivities Saturday, Oct. 13, beginning at 2 p.m. on Toby’s Plaza in front of MOCA Cleveland.

The event would not be possible without the presence of Cleveland-based musicians that make up the festival. Local legacies Paranoid Lovesick will reunite for the show, sharing the stage with seven other handpicked regional bands.

Those who can’t make it to the event can tune into 91.1 FM, as it will be simulcast on the station and online until 9 p.m.
