Campus Spotlight: Office of Faculty Development

This summer, faculty members at Case Western Reserve University can gather for weekly two-hour open writing sessions—dedicated, unstructured time to work on their writing projects. The program is just one of several opportunities hosted by the Office of Faculty Development to help faculty “in their pursuit of excellence in research, mentoring and leadership.” Each of the office’s activities supports one of three missions: career enhancement, community building and information dissemination.

To bolster the careers of faculty members at Case Western Reserve, the office offers programming like New Faculty Orientation, Mentor Fellows (now in its 11th year), a National Science Foundation CAREER Award writing group, To Tenure and Beyond (a year long program for second-year tenure track faculty), Leadership Forums for Department Chairs, and an Orientation for New Chairs, among many others. This year the office will offer faculty resource sessions, hosting representatives from offices around campus to help faculty learn more about resources on campus.

The Office of Faculty Development also helps connect individuals with community groups on campus, including the Asian Faculty Association, Parents’ Group and LGBTQ Research Group. Each year, the office also hosts a wine tasting event for faculty members and their spouses/partners. On its website, the office also pulls together useful resources for both new and existing faculty members. Review the information available.
