CWRU’s Bhangra dance team to hold workshops, tryouts

Case Western Reserve University’s Bhangra dance team will hold workshops and tryouts over the next few days for those who are interested in joining this year’s team.

Bhangra is a form of dance originating from the fields of Punjab, India, and has spread all over the world, becoming a popular style. The dance emphasizes happiness, energy, power and grace. CWRU’s Bhangra team incorporates ideas from hip-hop and various other genres into its routine to produce a unique performance. The team has been performing and competing at a national level for nearly seven years.

The team performs throughout the local area (primarily for local weddings) and competes nationally with teams from across the world.

Tryouts will be held Sept. 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Great Room of House Six in the Village at 115.

No dance experience is necessary to join the team. Many of the current team had no prior experience with Bhangra.

Those planning to try out must attend one workshop, though they also can attend any of the extra help sessions to practice the routine, ask questions and learn more about the team.

Workshops will be held Aug. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Aug. 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. Both workshops will be held in the Wade Commons Pioneer Room.

Those looking for clarification and help also can participate in extra sessions Aug. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and Sept. 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Wade Commons Pioneer Room.

The team will work individually with those who can’t make any of the workshop dates.
