New sessions of the Books@Work program will be offered in fall. This program helps employees connect through literature during faculty member-led sessions.
One spring 2019 participant shared: “[Books@Work] helped me feel more connected to the workplace and meet new people. Also, it let me learn about what others do at the university. I made connections to other departments that will be helpful for work, but more so, it was great to have a conversation with people that wasn’t about work.”
Books@Work started in Cleveland in 2009 and has been part of the Wellness Program’s community building component since January 2017.
“We use books that are human stories,” said Books@Work founder Ann Kowal Smith. “It’s not about how much you know about X topic or Y topic. It’s about how you relate to a character or what a story means to you. It allows people to engage at a much more personal level. When people engage at a personal level in the workplace, a lot of interesting things happen.”
This fall, a group will meet Fridays beginning Aug. 30, at 12:30 p.m. in Adelbert Hall, Room M2, and Tuesdays beginning Sept. 3 at noon Kelvin Smith Library, Room LL06. Each group will meet 12 times.
