The Case Western Reserve University chapter of the Federalist Society will welcome Suja Thomas, professor at the University of Illinois law school, to speak about the constitutional issues raised by the increased use of plea bargains in federal prosecutions.
Additionally, Rebecca Lutzko, assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, will provide a response to Thomas’ prepared remarks. A question-and-answer session will follow.
The event—titled “95% Plead Guilty: Is Plea Bargaining Constitutional?”—will be held today (Nov. 6) from noon to 1:05 p.m. at the School of Law, Room 157.
Lunch will be served and all members of the CWRU community are welcome.
About the Federalist Society
The Federalist Society was founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.
The society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities. The organization exists solely to promote the exchange of ideas, not to promote particular policies, appointments or politicians. It does not adopt political stances or advocate for political outcomes, lobby for legislation, or sponsor or endorse nominees or candidates.
