In celebration of Women’s History Month, throughout March, we will highlight some of the Case Western Reserve women whose accomplishments helped shape the university—and beyond.
The name Flora Stone Mather is familiar to most on campus, but how much do you know about this namesake?
Mather was a dedicated philanthropist who gave to religious, educational and social justice causes.
Among the many institutions Mather supported was Western Reserve University, where she was involved with the Advisory Council, College for Women (later renamed in her honor in 1931) and Adelbert College.
Mather’s gifts to the university included funds to construct Guilford Cottage (now Guilford House) and Haydn Hall.
When she died in 1909, her bequest included funding to complete construction of Amasa Stone Chapel, which is named for her father.
Upon Mather’s passing, friends and alumnae gave money to build Mather House in her honor.
