The sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta and the brothers of Delta Sigma Phi will host a Be the Match swab event to help patients in need of a bone marrow donor. The event will take place at the tabling area of the Tinkham Veale University Center Wednesday, Nov. 15, and Thursday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A bone marrow transplant often can cure patients with blood cancers. Only 30 percent of patients will have a matching donor in their family, leaving most to rely on the national registry to find a voluntary donor. Paperwork, a cheek swab and 10 minutes is all it takes to potentially save a life. The odds of getting contacted as a match are slim and the donation process is not painful.
