Almost all who answered this week’s Guess Where question knew that the photo was of the fountain on Case Quad, but few named it.
The Michelson-Morley Fountain was constructed in 1973 to commemorate Albert Michelson and Edward Morley’s 1886 experiment that disproved the theory of the “aether,” which was believed to be the substance with which light traveled through. Their work later was reflected in Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity.
Michelson was a professor of physics at the Case School of Applied Science and Morley was a professor of chemistry at Western Reserve University.
In 1907, Michelson became the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences.
