Provost W.A. “Bud” Baeslack announced today that Interim Chief Information Officer (CIO) Mark Henderson has accepted an appointment to become the CIO of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He will begin his new position in August, pending approval of the UIUC Board of Trustees.
Henderson came to Case Western Reserve in 2010 as the university’s associate vice president and chief operating officer of Information Technology Services (ITS). He became the interim CIO and vice president for ITS last summer after longtime CIO Lev Gonick became chief executive officer of OneCommunity.
“I am grateful to Mark for his service to the university in both of his roles,” Baeslack said. “He made a significant positive difference in overall customer service and programs to improve efficiency and enhance teaching and research. We wish him all the best in his new role.”
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the state’s flagship campus, with more than 44,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students and an endowment of $2.8 billion. As CIO, Henderson will be responsible for IT governance and policies, as well as the campus central IT organization and activities that seek to leverage technology to enhance scholarship. UI today is amid a number of major initiatives, among them a campus data center consolidation, data stewardship program, and learning space development effort.
Case Western Reserve’s national search for its own new CIO/VP for ITS is well underway. The search committee is composed of faculty, staff and students and led by Cyrus Taylor, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The search firm assisting the university is Brill Neumann, an organization that has worked with Case Western Reserve previously and also supported CIO searches at other prominent national research universities.
“The committee has done an outstanding job to date and I appreciate their commitment to this important recruitment,” Baeslack said. “We will update the university community regarding its progress as soon as is appropriate.”
