The American Library Association is recognizing National Library Week April 6–12, a celebration highlighting the valuable roles libraries, librarians and library staff play in strengthening and enriching lives. The theme this year is “Drawn to the Library.”

To mark the occasion, Kelvin Smith Library invites visitors to stop by the first floor and use the provided art supplies to create a drawing depicting what “draws” you to the library. Whether you visit the library for research, a study space, a class, library programs or just to browse, there’s something for everyone at the Kelvin Smith Library.
As part of the celebration, KSL librarians are also sharing five hidden gem resources they wish more people knew about.
1. You can ask KSL anytime.
With the library’s new 24/7 chat service, you can access real-time help from librarians around the clock.
2. You can enjoy free access to The New York Times.
Members of the CWRU community can activate a free access pass to The New York Times through KSL. Once registered, you can access NYTimes.com and its multimedia content, including podcasts, videos, photography and more from any device. Learn how to activate your pass and all the features you’ll have access to.
3. You can share your research through Scholarly Commons.
On March 25, 2024, CWRU faculty adopted the Faculty Open Access (OA) Policy, allowing faculty to publicly share peer-reviewed scholarly artifacts in CWRU’s repository, Scholarly Commons. If you authored or co-authored any peer-reviewed articles submitted to journals or conference proceedings and signed your publication agreement after that date, this policy applies to your work! You can deposit the accepted manuscript version* of those artifacts in Scholarly Commons, making a version of your work open access.
4. You can discover new research methods through the Digital Scholarship Workshop Series.
Through a series of hands-on workshops, the Digital Scholarship team helps the CWRU community learn how open-source digital tools allow you to explore research in new ways. There are two more opportunities to learn this semester!
- Monday, April 14: Advanced Graphing with ggplot in R
- Monday, April 21: Text-mining in R with TidyText
5. You can take advantage of lifelong learning with library alumni resources.
Are you gearing up for graduation? You can keep access to some CWRU Libraries resources with an Alumni Account. Alumni access includes databases such as JSTOR and Academic Search, as well as others covering topics like business, nursing, literature and more. See the entire list of resources and learn more about setting up your account today!
