Amman Spencer has two goals for this year—being accepted to medical school and increasing student feedback and involvement at Case Western Reserve University. On the first front, he’s enrolled in courses on nutritional biochemistry and metabolism, further honing his academic background to support his career goals. As for the latter goal? He’s already at work fostering a more inclusive and engaged campus community in his new role as president of Undergraduate Student Government (USG).
Spencer brings a wealth of leadership experience to USG. Originally from Maryland and of Eritrean-Jamaican descent, his interest in leadership roles at Case Western Reserve was fueled by his experience in his high school’s student government, though Spencer recognizes students’ needs are much different at the university level.
“The conversations in college are more intense and the issues are more complex,” Spencer said. “This realization only deepened my commitment to USG, where I can use the platform to make meaningful changes and advocate for my peers.”
Spencer’s dedication to expanding student engagement at CWRU is driven by the understanding that broader participation leads to better representation.
“The more we involve students in what we do, the better we can represent them,” Spencer said. “I hope students know that USG is a place where change can be made, and that the entire purpose is to represent the student body to the fullest.”
Among his key initiatives, Spencer hopes to strengthen the connection between CWRU students and the surrounding Cleveland community.
“As students, we get so much from the City of Cleveland and I hope to launch community-based projects that allow us to give back and express our gratitude,” he said.
