The forest is full of fungi. What do they look like and where can you find them? Which ones cook up nicely and which ones kill? These are critical questions to ask before you forage. Join the University Farm for a “Mushroom Hunt” to get the answers to these questions. Farm Food Program Coordinator Ryan Bennett will lead an outing Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the farm in Hunting Valley (37125 Fairmount Blvd.).
By the end of the session, participants should be able to identify a variety of local fungi and native plants, how to locate and collect fungi in the wild, and come away with lots of interesting facts about fungi, what to avoid and what to enjoy.
Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to participate, should come dressed in protective clothing and prepared for the weather and wear closed-toed boots or shoes. Participants are advised to wear bug repellant and gloves and bring a water bottle, bag or basket, pocket knife and notebook.
The “Mushroom Hunt” costs $40 per person, which is payable onsite on the day-of the event by check or credit/debit card.
