COVID-19 has disrupted the daily lives of people across the globe and put a halt on anticipated college experiences, but students are finding alternatives to maintain an optimistic attitude as we navigate through this new normal together. In hopes of inspiring joy during these unprecedented times, Dhamakapella joined in on creating a performance video like other collegiate acapella groups have done.
Despite the group’s competition season ending early and their yearly spring concert being canceled due to courses moving online, the beginning of spring semester started on a high note with the release of their newest EP album, Fitoor—which includes four songs from their competitions last season. Wanting to represent the South Asian Fusion a cappella community with a raw sound, group members re-recorded their parts for a video by listening to their arrangement using earbuds and singing along, creating a unified song from afar.
Dhamakapella performed “Treasure / Locha E Ulfat,” which was featured on its album and is among the group members’ favorite arrangements since it started singing the song in fall 2018. The song “Treasure” is originally recorded by Bruno Mars and “Locha E Ulfat” is among group members’ favorite movies—Two States.
“Although it is much easier to sing together in person, we couldn’t be happier with how the video turned out,” said Kasey Pukys, public relations chair of Dhamakapella. “We hope to continue making more music together this summer, too!”
