How Thursday’s candidate visit affects buildings, roads

Note: This post was updated at 5:40 p.m. to reflect an updated event start time of 9:45 a.m.

Due to higher-than-expected response, the campaign for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has moved Thursday morning’s public event to Freiberger Field, immediately west of the Tinkham Veale University Center.

Below are details regarding logistics and campus preparations for the event as they stand now; the university will issue an email to the entire campus community should any elements of the following information change.

Meanwhile, students, faculty, and staff with additional questions about Thursday morning may email Freiberger82715@case.edu.

For members of the campus community engaged in regular university activities, the most relevant details are:

  • The Tinkham Veale University Center will be closed from 11 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 26) through 11:45 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 27).
  • The Kelvin Smith Library will be open, but access to areas near the windows facing Freiberger Field will be restricted between 8 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Thursday.
  • The Campus Center garage (Lot S-29) will not be open to the public. Only university employees with permits for that lot (as well as orchestra members) will be allowed entry. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, access will be via both the East Boulevard and Bellflower Road entrances. From 9 a.m. until approximately 11:45 a.m., entry and egress will be only through the East Boulevard drive.
  • For those concerned about traffic delaying access to the S-29 garage, the university has opened the North Residential Village garage (Lot 46) to S-29 permit holders, regardless of usual location.
  • Vehicle traffic on East Boulevard between Euclid Avenue and Bellflower Road will be restricted to those entering the Campus Center garage from 7 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
  • Vehicle traffic on Bellflower Road between East Boulevard and Ford Drive will be restricted to those attending the event and accessing the parking lot adjacent to the former home of the Cleveland Institute of Art between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. The road will be closed to all vehicle traffic between 9 a.m. and approximately 11:45 a.m.

The information below applies more broadly to members of the campus community and the public planning to attend the event:

The Event

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will hold a community organizing meeting at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Freiberger Field.

Those who wish to attend in person must register in advance at the candidate’s webpage for the event.

Admission to the event will begin at 9 a.m., and be via the large white tent located immediately north of the Kelvin Smith Library at the southeast corner of East Boulevard and Bellflower Road. Attendees will proceed through security screening before entering Freiberger Field.

The following items are prohibited from the venue: weapons of any kind; bags or backpacks (small purses are permitted); beverage or food containers; umbrellas; sticks or supports for signs, flags, etc.; and chairs.

Cameras, smartphones and electronic tablets are permitted.

Event Parking

Members of the public attending the event may park in the lot adjacent to the former home of the Cleveland Institute of Art, located north of Freiberger Field on the northeast corner of East Boulevard and Bellflower Road. Parking for the event is $10 per car. The lot will open at 7 a.m., and may be accessed from either East Boulevard or Bellflower Road from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. After 9 a.m. it may be accessed only via East Boulevard.

This lot has limited spaces and is likely to fill quickly.

Again, the Campus Center Garage on East Boulevard is not open to the public.

Other nearby public parking may be found on Wade Oval at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, and the Ford Garage just south of Euclid Avenue, and regular fees will apply. In addition, visitors may park in the university garage at the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center, located on the southern end of Adelbert Road where it intersects with Murray Hill and West Murray Hill roads. Finally, visitors may park in the garage at the North Residential Village. Its entrance is located just off East 118th St., roughly a block north of Euclid Avenue. In addition to the usual shuttles that service the NRV garage, an additional shuttle will transport attendees from the garage to the corner of Bellflower and Ford Roads. All university lots will charge usual fees as well.
