Zimbabwe police defy order to free lawyer, group says

The New York Times: The Zimbabwean police are holding Beatrice Mtetwa, 2011 recipient of the Inamori Ethics Prize, on charges of obstructing justice—defying a high court ruling ordering her release. The arrest of Mtetwa, a renowned human rights lawyer, follows months of crackdowns on opposition politicians and civic groups in Zimbabwe. “The allegation is that I have been obstructing the police in the performance of their duties,” she said. “The view I take is they have been obstructing me in my duties as a lawyer. I have a client whose rights have been violated, and I am unable to help him because I am now an accused myself.”
