WJWJonathan Ernest, assistant professor of economics at Weatherhead School of Management, said that the cash payout for the Powerball lottery may be the most popular, but it might not be the smartest way to take the winnings—especially if the lucky winner has poor self-control. “If you’re concerned at all that you might be too tempted to put that money to some wild investments, it might make the most sense to restrict yourself and know that you’ll have those (annuity) payments coming in year after year,” he said.
