In her remarks at this year’s convocation ceremony, commencement speaker Susie Gharib, an award-winning journalist, spoke to members of the Case Western Reserve University Class of 2025 about an important task: writing the story of tomorrow.
“Write that story with courage and with heart, and write it together with those around you,” she said. “If you do that, you won’t just navigate the future—you’ll help shape it into something bright and bold.”
Her speech was the cornerstone of celebrations that spanned four days and 10 diploma ceremonies. To help members of the undergraduate class—and those receiving graduate and professional degrees—celebrate, faculty, staff and fellow students gathered for a “Clap Out” on Case Quad Wednesday as students processed to the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center. Following the event, graduates and members of the campus community gathered at the Spartan Send-off Barbecue for food, beverages and activities.
In addition to graduates, the ceremonies included the celebration of several award winners, including those receiving honorary degrees, John S. Diekhoff Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring, the J. Bruce Jackson MD Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring, the Carl F. Wittke Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Distinguished University Professorships, the President’s Award for Visionary Achievement and the Frank and Dorothy Humel Hovorka Prize.
