Veale Fieldhouse reopening rescheduled as renovations continue

The scheduled reopening of the Veale Fieldhouse has been delayed until Friday, Jan. 15, as the finishing touches are put on the renovations to the track and courts in the facility.

With completion of the resurfacing of the facility scheduled for next week, the track and courts will be available again to the public during normal spring hours at the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center on Jan. 15.

The Veale Reveal, commemorating the reopening of the facility, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 5 p.m. inside the Fieldhouse.

Featured speakers at the Veale Reveal will include Case Western Reserve University Vice President for Student Affairs Lou Stark and Director of Athletics Amy Backus, who will later join Track and Field head coach Eric Schmuhl and senior cross country and track and field team member Chippy Kennedy in a ceremonial first lap on the new track.

Light refreshments will be served at the event.

The track surface, which had been in place for 17 years, was resurfaced over winter break by Beynon Sports with a 10-millimeter BSS 2000 RE System, featuring an encapsulated texture for the areas outside the basketball courts and on one basketball court, with a smooth spike proof texture on the remaining three basketball courts.

The new surface on the track and courts will be in navy blue, with surrounding areas in gray, to match the university’s color scheme, while an updated Spartan logo will also be prominently featured in the facility.

The four basketball, tennis, volleyball and badminton courts in the center of the track are also being re-striped along with the track.

The first meet at the updated facility will be Saturday, Jan. 30, starting at 1:30 p.m. when the Case Western Reserve track and field team hosts rival Carnegie Mellon University for the Ninth-Annual Battle for the Obelisk.
