University issues guidance on travel ban; reminder of DACA deadline

The latest version of President Trump’s travel ban now faces its own legal challenge, but Case Western Reserve continues to advise individuals from the cited countries to follow the guidance the university issued last week.

The American Civil Liberties Union and National Immigration Law Center sent a letter Friday to a Maryland federal judge indicating they wished to amend their existing complaint and request a preliminary injunction to stop implementation of the new executive order issued Sept. 24. That judge, Theodore D. Chuang, in March ruled against parts of an earlier iteration of the ban. The new order is scheduled to go into effect Oct. 18.

University leaders have consistently opposed the administration’s attempts to restrict U.S. entry by individuals from select countries. Case Western Reserve’s 2008 and 2013 strategic plans emphasized internationalization, inclusion and diversity as top priorities. In January, the president and provost wrote that the initial order was “antithetical to our core values,” while the Faculty Senate adopted a resolution condemning the first order as “contrary to morality.” In February, the Center for International Affairs launched #YouAreWelcomeHereCWRU, a campuswide campaign of support for all individuals here from other countries.

This fall, meanwhile, the university responded to another White House announcement, this one regarding rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. That day, the president and provost wrote to the campus community to emphasize that Dreamers are welcome at Case Western Reserve, and that the university opposed the administration’s effort to end DACA. In recent weeks, members of Congress have been working to forge a compromise to allow the 800,000 undocumented individuals registered under DACA to stay in the U.S. Meanwhile, the university reminds those Dreamers whose benefits expire no later than March 5, 2018, that the deadline to request a DACA renewal is Oct. 5—that is, the request must be received by that date, not simply postmarked before then.
