University data now available in new, interactive analytics platform

The Data Management, Analytics and Visualization team in University Technology ([U]Tech) is completing the implementation of a new analytics software, Tableau. Tableau is an easy-to-use, web-based data visualization platform, allowing users to access data quickly and securely.

All university employees with a network ID have access to login to the enterprise portal at data.case.edu, at no cost to their department/unit. Get more information about other license types.

Through carefully curated, validated dashboards containing university data assets, the Case Western Reserve University community will have a common language to discuss situations and make data-driven decisions across the university at all levels and divisions more efficiently and effectively. Tableau can be accessed via web browser or mobile application 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. For your convenience, you may also use our web portals to access Tableau.

Data Access

The General Institutional folder, found at data.case.edu under the Explore tab, contains interactive “internal public” university data that all employees have access to view. This includes, but is not limited to, student demographic information, enrollment statistics, live data feeds and recent survey results.

Access to other folders and dashboards (also called workbooks) is determined by need-based criteria and employment roles at the university. By allowing access to only those who should be permitted to see confidential and/or restricted internal data, Tableau’s secure sharing and permission model aligns with the university Data Governance Program.

Training Resources

In order to understand and navigate Tableau’s interactive functionality, view capabilities, report formats and more, [U]Tech is offering several live, virtual training sessions over the next couple of weeks.

Please follow the links below to register for a session on CampusGroups. Once you register, you will receive a Zoom link. Each session is limited to 500 employees. You may also view previously recorded sessions and other resources at your convenience on our Tableau Viewer Canvas Course Site. More training resources on Canvas as well as analytics dashboards in the data portals are continuing to be developed; check back for updates in the future.
