University a cappella group takes second place at national competition

Dhamakapella, an international music group from Case Western Reserve University, was named the second best South Asian a cappella group in the country at Anahat, earning the group a $1,000 prize.

Anahat is an annual competition at UC Berkeley for which eight groups are selected from dozens of audition videos, and those eight groups perform live at Anahat. Other competitors included UC Berkeley, Rutgers, University of Washington and UCLA. This is the first time a team from a smaller school has placed.

Last semester, Dhamakapella released a studio album, Pehli Nazar, which is available through the group’s website and on iTunes. They also have been invited to perform in cities such as Pittsburgh, Houston and Ann Arbor, Mich.

Dhamakapella will perform at the Indian Students Association Culture Show on Dec. 3. To find out more about the group and listen to samples of their music, visit www.dhamakapella.org.
