“Understanding Community: Elder Abuse 101”

The Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences LINK (Local InterNational Konnection) student group will host a special virtual session on “Understanding Community: Elder Abuse 101” today (Dec. 6) from 4 to 5 p.m. EST via Zoom.

The goal of this presentation is to provide attendees with a basic understanding of different types of elder abuse, roles of Adult Protective Services (APS) and responsibilities to reporting.

This session will provide an overview of elder abuse. It will identify different types of elder abuse, warning signs of elder abuse and mandatory reporting requirements. Also, it will discuss the duties of Cuyahoga County Adult Protective Services and support resources from the Division of Senior and Adult Services Programs.

Learning objectives of this event are to:

  • Discuss the prevalence of elder abuse;
  • Explain the barriers to reporting;
  • Describe the role of Adult Protective Services;
  • Define elder abuse;
  • Describe the six types of elder abuse and the signs of each type; and
  • Discuss mandatory reporting requirements.

The session will feature guest presenters Natasha Pietrocola, deputy administrator with the Division of Senior and Adult Services, and Siyue Xu, medical social worker with Crossroads Hospice.
