Undergraduate Diversity Collaborative seeks spot in Student Executive Council

Case Western Reserve undergraduates have until 11:59 p.m. next Friday (April 24) to vote on a proposal to add a new student organization to the seven that now decide how their activities fees are spent.

The Undergraduate Diversity Collaborative (UDC) is an umbrella organization that includes student groups involved in efforts that promote diversity and inclusion on campus.

Over the past several months, its leaders have worked to become part of the Student Executive Council (SEC), a board that includes organizations such as Undergraduate Student Government and the Residence Hall Association. In March, SEC members approved bringing a referendum to the student body for action. Now, per the organization’s bylaws, a minimum of 25 percent of the student body must cast ballots for the measure to be considered valid, and 60 percent of the student body must approve for it to pass.

The proposal calls for the UDC to serve as a voting member of the SEC in the fall of 2015, but not one that receives resources from the SEC during that term. If passed, UDC leaders would use the fall semester as an opportunity for learning more about the SEC’s functions and engaging with member organizations treasurers’ to learn details of their financial activities. The UDC’s goal is to become a full financial member the spring semester.

The Student Executive Council today includes:

  • Class Officer Collective,
  • Interfraternity Congress,
  • Panhellenic Council,
  • Residence Hall Association,
  • University Media Board,
  • University Program Board and
  • Undergraduate Student Government.

In addition to deciding the allocation of dollars from the Student Activities Fee ($171 per semester), the body also seeks to enhance communication among the member organizations and also to coordinate activities.

Undergraduates can vote in OrgSync before 11:59 p.m. next Friday.
