The University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education (UCITE) will host a First Fridays session about a UCITE-funded study on mindfulness in the classroom Friday, Nov. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Allen Memorial Medical Library’s Herrick Room.
This UCITE-funded study explored whether starting university classes with a brief (under five minutes) mindfulness activity demonstrates positive effects on students’ sense of well-being in the classroom, and on class dynamics as a whole, among a university population (undergraduate, graduate and professional students across various majors).
For this study, faculty members were trained on doing brief mindfulness activities, and a sub-group of students from these classes chose to participate in a pre-post test survey. Although the sample was small, the researchers had promising results, and are seeking to duplicate the study with a larger sample this spring (2023).
Faculty members are invited to come to learn more about the results, and about how mindfulness might benefit their classrooms.
