Q-Grad will host a talk at Research ShowCASE with Jian Chen, assistant professor at The Ohio State University. The lecture, titled “Trans of Color Emergences,” will take place Thursday, April 19, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center.
About the talk
Chen will explore the cultural practices created by trans and gender-nonconforming artists and activists of color. The emerging groups argue for a rethinking of the policies and technologies of racial gendering and assimilative social programming that have divided LGBT communities and communities of color along the lines of gender, sexuality, class, immigration status and ability. Focusing on performance, film/video, literature, digital media and other forms of cultural expression and activism that track the displaced emergences of trans of color people, Chen will highlight the complex and varied responses by trans communities to their social dispossession.

Chen is assistant professor of queer studies in the English department; director of Sexuality Studies; and affiliate faculty in Asian American Studies, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Film Studies at The Ohio State University.
