With July comes long days, summer fun, and rising temperatures. One way to stay cool is to indulge in ice cream and, here in Cleveland, there are plenty of places to grab a sweet treat. On Wednesdays in July, we’ll take you on a tour of some local favorites.
This week, we’re heading out to the Cleveland suburbs to try another local favorite: East Coast Original Frozen Custard. Inspired by the frozen custard created at Coney Island in 1919 both in taste and in name, East Coast Original Frozen Custard first opened shop in the area in 1985.
With locations in Fairview Park, Lyndhurst, Mentor, Painesville and Parma Heights, East Coast Original Frozen Custard has an extensive menu featuring custard served in sundaes, cones, concretes (their version of a “blizzard”), to-go containers and shakes. The menu also includes novelties such as cakes, cookies, pies and suckers.
In addition to their signature vanilla flavor, each location has a menu calendar with daily and monthly specials. For example, the Lyndhurst and Parma Heights locations are offering a Fourth of July float and a specialty coffee toffee shake this month.
If you head out to the Lyndhurst location on Saturday (July 17), you can give mango custard and Mayfield Road crunch yogurt a try. Not sure how to get there? Use the Cleveland RTA’s 9 bus route from the Mayfield Road and Circle Drive stop to the Mayfield Road and Brainard Road stop (about a 40-minute trip each way). Driving, the Lyndhurst location is about a 20-minute trip, while the other locations range from about 25 to 35 minutes by car from campus.
But you don’t always need to head far to get a taste of East Coast Custard. East Coast Original Frozen Custard trucks have been known to make stops on campus for giveaways hosted by various university offices.
