Three CWRU students selected as Goldwater Scholarship recipients

Zahin Islam, Daniel Shao and Evan Vesper, all undergraduates, were recently selected as Goldwater Scholarship recipients.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program awarded 396 scholarships in 2020, from a pool of 1,343 undergraduates nominated by 461 institutions. The program is designed to attract outstanding students into careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are sophomores or juniors during the current academic year. Awardees have excellent academic records and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Scholarships of up to $7,500 a year are provided to help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books, and room and board.

Islam is a biology student; Shao is studying systems biology, computer science, and biology; and Vesper is studying electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and French.
