“Think Good: How Would Education and Life at CWRU Change if We Loved Our Fellow Humans as Ourselves?”

In the final meeting of the Ethics Table for 2018-19, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer, the Elmer G. Beamer-Hubert H. Schneider Professor in Ethics, and Bharat Ranganathan, the Beamer-Schneider SAGES Teaching Fellow in Ethics, will lead a conversation titled “Think Good: How Would Education and Life at CWRU Change if We Loved Our Fellow Humans as Ourselves?”

The discussion will take place Friday, April 12, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Thwing Center, Cleveland Room.

About the discussion

At Case Western Reserve University, what might it mean to recognize and respect one another as fellow humans? Does proving oneself to be a fellow human depend on the role occupied, whether faculty, staff or student? Does who counts as a fellow human depend on their identity, that is, whether they are members of the CWRU community? And what does proving oneself to be a fellow human determine, for example, whether they are good scholars, good community leaders or both?

The discussion will consider:

  • What sorts of intellectual pursuits are worth going after;
  • Whether there are limits to toleration, inclusivity and diversity; and
  • How individuals might relate intellectual endeavors to lives of service and justice.
