Talk about the “problem” of teen mothers at next Public Affairs Discussion Group

MaryErdmans_000The campus community is invited to attend the next Public Affairs Discussion Group for a conversation about teen pregnancy and related issues. Mary Erdmans, associate professor of sociology, will lead the talk, titled “The ‘Problem’ of Teen Mothers.”

The event will take place Friday, April 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Kelvin Smith Library’s Dampeer Room.

In her research, Erdmans and her co-principal investigator Timothy Black, associate professor of sociology, argue that the focus on the timing of the birth distracts us from larger social problems that originate in systemic racial, class and gender inequalities.

Since 1989, faculty, emeriti, students and staff have gathered on Fridays for a brown-bag lunch and to discuss topics in public affairs.
