Sept. 23-27 is National Hazing Awareness Week! Across the country, students and the people who care about them will pause to learn more about hazing and take action to prevent and respond to hazing. Here at CWRU, we have an Anti-Hazing Policy that outlines our community’s definitions, requirements, and resources.
What should you be doing? Check to make sure you’ve completed your required module. All students must complete the CWRU hazing prevention module to become eligible to join a student organization. Most new students were required to do it as part of their orientation. Advisors and consultants to student organizations must complete their own version of the CWRU hazing prevention module for faculty, staff, and volunteers. Not sure whether you completed it? Log into Vector Solutions with your CWRU Single-Sign On and look for your certificate of completion.
What else can you do? You are welcome to attend programs, watch movies, read books, or visit any of a number of websites such as StopHazing.org and HazingInfo.org. An important thing you can do is interrupt hazing when you think it might be happening. First, if anyone is in immediate danger, call 216.368.3333 (on-campus) or 911. You can also report hazing through the CCRS process (Community Concerns Reporting System), and you can even do that anonymously. Not sure where to report? It’s OK to raise the question and talk it through with someone in the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, or other trusted advisor.
