Symposium for the Center for Aerospace Physiology

The Case Western Reserve University community is invited to the inaugural Symposium for the Center for Aerospace Physiology, which is housed within the Department of Physiology & Biophysics at the School of Medicine.

The symposium will be held April 29–30 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Thwing Center’s Excelsior Ballroom.

The center’s team of multidisciplinary scientists collaborates closely with flight surgeons and aerospace physiologists from NASA, the Air Force and the Navy to develop new strategies to enable humans to live and thrive within austere environments on earth, the upper atmosphere and beyond.

Jay Dean, professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida’s School of Medicine, will give a featured lecture Monday, April 29, at 10:30 a.m.

Cynthia Beall, Distinguished University Professor and the Sarah Idell Pyle Professor of Anthropology at Case Western Reserve University, will give a keynote address Monday, April 29, at 12:45 p.m.

Other speakers during the first day of the program will include:

  • Richard D. Arnold, director of the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio;
  • Ryan S. Mayes of the United States Air Force 711th Human Performance Wing at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine;
  • David J. Alexander, a NASA Flight Surgeon in the Medical Operations Branch in the Space Medicine Division at Johnson Space Center; and
  • Walter Boron, the David N. and Inez Myers/Antonio Scarpa Professor and chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University.

There also will be a panel discussion on the first day of the event.

Dean will give another lecture on the second day of the program (April 30) 1 p.m. titled “Winning the Physiological Air War of 1939-1945: The History of Aero Medical Research and Practices in America during WWII.”
