Support Nepal earthquake relief efforts at May 13 fundraiser

Nepal FundraiserThe Case Western Reserve University Nepali Student Organization will host a fundraiser to provide immediate relief and aid reconstruction for victims of the catastrophic earthquakes that have struck. The fundraiser, sponsored by Graduate Student Senate, will be held Wednesday, May 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the ballroom of Thwing Center. The event is open to the campus community. The fundraiser will include Nepali dances, a musical program, food and stories.

Significantly stronger than the earthquake that affected Haiti in 2010, the April 25 earthquake killed at least 7,365 people and injured at least 14,355 more. This 7.8 Richter scale earthquake had implications not just for Nepal, but also for India, China, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and European nations. Thousands of people are still unaccounted for. There also has been extensive property damage, with 600,000 houses damaged or destroyed. Just today, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal.

The Nepali Student Organization is organizing this event to raise funds to provide immediate and long-term assistance to survivors of this unimaginable tragedy and to express solidarity with the earthquake victims. All of the proceeds from this event will go to local grassroots organizations that are focusing on areas (e.g., remote areas, disadvantaged populations) that are receiving less mainstream attention.
