Student book-collecting contest returns to Kelvin Smith Library

Kelvin Smith Library is bringing back its popular book collecting contest for undergraduate and graduate students, with entries due Friday, March 4, at 5 p.m. EST. This year, first-place prizes will be awarded in two categories—undergraduate and graduate students.

Winners will be announced the week of April 4, and an awards reception and pop-up exhibit featuring items from each winner’s collection will follow on April 13. (A virtual event will be offered if the university’s COVID-related restriction against gatherings remains in place.)

The contest is part of the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest, sponsored by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America.

Julia Gelfand (LYS ‘77, GRS ‘77), will once again lend her generous support to the contest. Gelfand has sponsored the contest and other book-collecting events at the library since 2017. The Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society is a co-sponsor of this year’s event.

Prizes include:

  • First place (graduate): $700
  • First place (undergraduate): $700
  • Second place: $400
  • Third place: $200

In addition to the prize amounts, both first-place winners will receive $50 gift certificates to Loganberry Books. All four winners will receive complimentary one-year memberships to NOBS.
