“What Does a Quality Online Course Look Like? Quality Matters Workshop”

Designing an online course can be a daunting endeavor. Ensuring the quality of your online course design is critical as it has a direct impact on not only course delivery but the overall success of online and blended learning programs. Some of the factors that need to be considered include course design, course delivery, the learning management system, faculty readiness, student readiness, infrastructures and more.

Quality Matters (QM) is a nationally recognized, faculty-driven peer-review process used to ensure the quality of online and blended course design. The Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric is a set of standards used to evaluate the design of online and blended courses. It was developed by faculty and is based on research on best practices in online education.

University Technology’s Teaching and Learning Technologies team and the Weatherhead School of Management’s Distance Learning program will host one-day workshop titled “What Does a Quality Online Course Look Like? Quality Matters Workshop” Monday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Peter B. Lewis Building, Room 203. This session will introduce attendees to the underlying principles of quality course design as it relates to online and blended learning. 

After completing this workshop, individuals will be able to:

• Recognize the foundational concepts of Quality Matters;
• Identify the critical elements of the QM quality assurance program, including the QM Rubric, materials, processes and administrative component;
• Apply the QM Rubric to review online courses;
• Make decisions on whether the demo course meets selected QM Rubric Standards;
• Apply the concept of alignment; and
• Draft helpful recommendations for course improvement by citing annotations from the QM Rubric and evidence from the course.
