Join La Alianza, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and the Vice-Presidency for Student Affairs in celebration of 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month with a lecture from Brenda Domínguez-Rosado. She will speak about her book, “The Unlinking of Language and Puerto Rican Identity: Reflection of the Power of the Diaspora,” Friday, Sept. 17, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Thwing Ballroom.
Brenda Domínguez-Rosado, professor of English at University of Puerto Rico, is a distinguished author and sociolinguist of Puerto Rican and Mexican-American descent. In her lecture, Domínguez-Rosado will discuss the research that inspired her book as well as her life experiences regarding her cultural identity. She will explore the roots of tension among people of Puerto Rican ancestry and the link between language and identity. Domínguez-Rosado’s research shows that there is not only a change in attitude towards the traditional link between language and identity, but also a wider acceptance of the English language among people of Puerto Rican ancestry. This may also be the case for other communities in the U.S. that live far away from their heritage countries.
All members of the CWRU community are welcome to attend. Please register to attend the event.
