Members of the Case Western Reserve University community are invited to the Department of English’s “Roundtable on Genre: Tragedy, Pastoral, American Sonnet” Friday, Sept. 6, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in the Guilford House parlor.
Panelists will use three case studies—tragedy, pastoral and the American sonnet—to think about the role of genre in writing and analyzing literature. They will consider how genres might be defined through prescriptive rules, historical genealogies or exemplary works. And they ask how awareness of generic conventions shapes the approaches of authors and readers.
Participants in the panel will be:
- Denna Iammarino, a lecturer of English;
- Cammy Ring, a PhD student in the department; and
- Maggie Vinter, associate professor of English.
John Wiehl, a lecturer of English, will moderate the discussion.
