The Ethics Table will hold its first meeting of the 2019-20 school year Friday, Oct. 11, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Clark Hall, Room 206.
In this meeting, Bharat Ranganathan, the Beamer-Schneider SAGES Teaching Fellow in Ethics, will lead a conversation about how thinking about the common good may help address the economic, political and social problems that beset Cleveland.
From food scarcity to income gaps to the degradation of the Cuyahoga River and the Great Lakes, this meeting will explore:
- How a commitment to the common good may help reimagine what counts as a community;
- How we might develop a sense of place; and
- How we might begin to affirm the dignity of our neighbors and steward the natural world upon which we depend.
About the talk
The common good holds that everyone is entitled to share in society’s resources. Moreover, everyone is also responsible for sharing our society’s resources—the common good—with one another.
The common good extends beyond not only our personal interests but also our national borders; it extends to our one global human family. Based on the belief that we experience the fullness of life in our relationships with others, working toward the common good requires a commitment from each and every person to respecting the rights and responsibilities of all people.
