The Health Advocacy Leadership Organization and the Social Justice Institute will conclude the Advocacy Education for Health Justice Workshop series Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Thwing Center, Room 101. The focus of this workshop will be on gun violence prevention as a public health issue and will include information about Ohio gun policies and recent campaigns.
Experts from the campus and community will present information about local coalitions, communication strategies and negotiation techniques used by activists and advocates.
Panelists will be:
- Sharyna Cloud, executive director of Cleveland Peacemaker’s Alliance;
- Daniel Flannery, director of the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences;
- Scott Frank, director of public health initiatives in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences;
- Andrea Martemus-Peters, violence injury prevention coordinator of the Northern Ohio Trauma System;
- Susan Reis, founder of Ohioans for Gun Safety; and
- Esther Tseng, trauma surgeon at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Workshop participants also will work together to develop novel campaign proposals to address the issue. A light dinner will be provided.
