The joint program between the Department of Art History and Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art will host the 45th Cleveland Symposium, titled “Visualizing Sound and Silence in Art and Architecture.” This year, the symposium will take place Friday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Recital Hall.
Graduate students presenters from across the U.S. will examine how sound and silence contribute to liturgical rituals and forms of individual self-expression and convey feelings of loss and anxiety about traumatic historical events and ongoing abuses of power.
Vincent Debiais of L’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales will give a keynote lecture titled “The Angel in the Square: Silence in Medieval Images” at 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the Cleveland Museum of Art Banquet Hall.
This event is free and open to the public.
