Earlier this week, the Case Western Reserve University softball team gathered to watch the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championships. The room was quiet as the student-athletes waited to find out if their season would continue.
When the announcer declared Case Western Reserve University received one of the 19 Pool “C” bids to the tournament, the room immediately filled with screams, as members of the team jumped up and down and hugged one another.
The selection comes after a regular season that concluded with a 31-8 overall record, and a 10-6 conference record.
This is just the second time the CWRU softball team will appear in the NCAA championships, with its first bid coming in 2001.
The Spartans will face off against Ohio Northern University Friday, May 11, at noon in Notre Dame, Indiana, to open the regional tournament. ONU finished the 2018 regular season with a 30-9 overall record and earned the Ohio Athletic Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships by winning the OAC Tournament last weekend.
