SAGES instructor pens op-ed on controversy in Britain about empire

Luke Reader, SAGES instructor, penned an op-ed for History News Network about the current controversy in England on the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College at Oxford University.

The controversy sheds light on Britain’s history of colonization. Rhodes established an empire in the areas of modern-day South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. He’s also credited with laying the foundation for apartheid.

At college campuses across Britain, students have demanded for the removal of statues depicting Rhodes.

Reader described the controversy in his op-ed, which is available at historynewsnetwork.org/article/161884.
