Reverend Katie G. Cannon will deliver the 2014 Covenant Lecture Fund Lecture titled “Through Fire and Brimstone: Black Women’s Literature as Embodied Mediated Wisdom.” The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. the Church of the Covenant. The Cleveland Ecumenical Institute for Religious Studies will co-sponsor the event.
Cannon is the Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Va. The first African American woman ordained in the United Presbyterian Church (U.S.), Cannon focuses her work in the areas of Christian ethics, Womanist theology, and women in religion and society. She has lectured nationally on theological and ethical topics and is the author of numerous articles and seven books including: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community and Black Womanist Ethics.
Cannon will also give the 10 a.m. sermon at the service on June 1.
